CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw laid the foundation stone for the Wagon Periodical Overhauling (POH) Capacity Enhancement Project at Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop. The project, to be implemented at a cost of approximately ₹78.96 crore, aims to increase the current repair capacity of 545 wagons to 800 wagons per month. This upgrade is expected to significantly improve wagon availability, operational efficiency, and turnaround time.
In addition, the Minister inspected the redevelopment works of Jamalpur Station, which are being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹30 crore. He issued essential instructions to officials for the timely upgrade of the station and the workshop.
At Jamalpur Workshop, the Railway Minister also reviewed various railway products such as BOXN wagons, BLCS wagons, brake vans with toilets, 140-ton cranes, 8-wheeler tower cars, and the Jamalpur Jack. This step is seen as crucial for expanding the workshop’s technical capabilities through infrastructure upgrades.
On this occasion, the Minister also visited the Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE), Jamalpur, and released a brochure related to the “Center of Excellence” initiative. Under this scheme, advanced training will be provided in fields such as welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechatronics. From 2026 onwards, external participants will also be offered skill development training at IRIMEE.
Reflecting the growth in railway development, it was shared that during 2009–2014, Bihar was allocated an average of ₹1,132 crore annually in the railway budget. This figure has risen to ₹10,066 crore in 2024–25. Since 2014, 1,832 km of new rail lines and 3,020 km of electrification have been completed, achieving 100% electrification across the state.
