CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Air pollution in Delhi has risen again. After air quality remained in the moderate category for four days, the capital’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 229 on Wednesday, October 28, placing it in the poor category. The AQI was 197 on Tuesday. Amid the rise in pollution, the weather department has forecast rain on Thursday and Friday, raising hopes of temporary relief for residents of the capital.

According to Central Pollution Control Board data, air quality was the worst in Vivek Vihar, where the AQI was recorded at 316, in the very poor category. Of Delhi’s 58 monitoring stations, 41 recorded air in the poor category, while 16 recorded moderate air quality. According to experts, when wind speed is low, pollutant particles begin to accumulate in the atmosphere and pollution levels rise.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy skies in Delhi on October 29, with light to moderate rain likely at several places. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds may occur in some areas. Light rain and thundershowers are also forecast for Friday. The rain could also lead to a drop in the maximum temperature.

According to Delhi’s air quality early warning system, air quality may remain in the moderate category between October 29 and 31. However, the possibility of pollution rising again after that has not been ruled out. How long the relief from rain lasts will depend on wind speed and weather conditions.

Amid rising pollution in the capital, people are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exercise, especially in the morning and evening. Children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems should take extra precautions. Rain is likely to bring some relief, but sustained efforts are necessary to control pollution.
