CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Two major cities of Chhattisgarh, Raipur and Bilaspur, have been included in a plan to develop them as model cities for sanitation. Both cities have been selected under the Pragati-50 initiative. Through this plan, emphasis will be placed on improving urban sanitation systems, strengthening waste management and upgrading civic facilities.

Under the plan, preparations are being made to take various steps to make sanitation-related systems in the cities more effective. These may include regular collection of waste, its proper disposal, cleaning of public places and increasing citizen participation.

However, the burden of meeting the cost of implementing and operating this system is likely to fall on the general public. For this, urban bodies are preparing to increase user charges. If user charges are increased, citizens may have to pay more than before in return for sanitation services.

Regarding this proposal, it will be important to maintain a balance between sanitation facilities in the cities and the financial burden on citizens. The actual impact of the fee increase will depend on its rates, the date of implementation and the related services. Better management, regular monitoring and citizens’ cooperation will be necessary for the success of the plan to make Raipur and Bilaspur model cities. At the same time, before increasing user charges, it will also be important to clarify its justification and its impact on ordinary people.
