CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The state of Rajasthan has celebrated “Godawan Day” to highlight its commitment to the conservation of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, locally known as Godawan, the state bird of Rajasthan. The event marks a significant step in raising awareness about the urgent need to protect one of the world’s most threatened bird species, whose population has drastically declined due to habitat loss, infrastructure development, and human interference.

The celebration saw participation from forest officials, conservationists, and local communities, who reiterated their support for ongoing protection and breeding programs. The Rajasthan government has been actively implementing conservation initiatives such as Project Great Indian Bustard, captive breeding centres, and habitat protection measures in regions like the Desert National Park in Jaisalmer.

Officials emphasized that the Godawan is not just a symbol of Rajasthan’s natural heritage but also an indicator of the health of the fragile desert ecosystem. Efforts are being made to reduce threats such as power line collisions and to strengthen breeding and reintroduction programs.

Recent conservation progress has shown encouraging signs, with improved monitoring and breeding success rates. However, experts warn that the species still remains critically endangered, with only a few hundred individuals left in the wild. The observance of Godawan Day aims to strengthen public engagement and ensure long-term survival of this iconic bird.
