CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Rajasthan’s upcoming urban local body elections are witnessing a noticeable entry of Generation Z into electoral politics. Young candidates associated with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are seeking to establish themselves in municipal politics, bringing a new generation of leaders into the contest. Reports indicate that around 70 Gen Z candidates have been fielded across five major Rajasthan cities, with Congress reportedly giving tickets to more young candidates than the BJP.
The growing participation of young candidates reflects changing political priorities and increasing interest among younger voters in local governance. Issues such as employment, education, skill development, career opportunities, infrastructure, cleanliness and civic facilities are becoming important themes in the campaign. Congress has also launched its “GenZ for Change” campaign to connect with first-time and young voters through youth committees and digital outreach.
The BJP, meanwhile, is strengthening its organisational campaign and urging workers to support officially selected candidates amid competition and dissent over tickets.
With polling scheduled for September 9 and 11 and counting on September 14, Rajasthan’s civic elections could provide an important test of whether young candidates can convert their digital-era appeal and fresh political image into grassroots electoral support.
