CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Rajpal Yadav backs Daler Mehndi, questions minister’s conduct on stage
After the on-stage dispute between Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi and Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal, personalities from the entertainment world are coming forward in support of the singer. Actor Rajpal Yadav defended Daler Mehndi, saying he does not drink alcohol and is also not keeping well these days. Rajpal questioned the minister’s public conduct and said an artist’s dignity and art should be respected.
Rajpal Yadav extends support through video
In a video shared on social media, Rajpal Yadav said a person holding a ministerial post should not speak to a reputed artist in this manner on a public stage. He said art cannot be bought and an artist’s contribution should be respected. Rajpal said he had worked with Daler Mehndi in the film Welcome to the Jungle. According to him, the singer does not consume alcohol and is going through health-related problems. Rajpal also wished him a speedy recovery.
What happened at the Kunjapuri fair?
The controversy took place during the cultural evening of the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair, held in the Narendranagar area of Tehri district in Uttarakhand. On Sunday night, Daler Mehndi was performing on stage when Minister Subodh Uniyal expressed displeasure over his performance. In a viral video, the minister is seen telling the singer that when he is not able to speak properly, how will he sing. The minister also questioned why the performance was being given on pre-recorded music instead of live singing before the audience.
Minister claims payment of Rs 35 lakh
Speaking to the media, Subodh Uniyal claimed that Daler Mehndi had been paid Rs 35 lakh to perform at the programme. According to the minister, the singer appeared uncomfortable on stage and the audience was not getting the expected performance. He said this was why he intervened on the stage. However, there has been no independent or official confirmation of the allegation that Daler Mehndi was under the influence of alcohol. The minister’s comments and the statements of the singer’s supporters should be viewed as claims made by the respective sides.
Anupam Kher and other artists also extend support
Before Rajpal Yadav, actor Anupam Kher, singer Mika Singh and other artists had also issued statements in support of Daler Mehndi. Anupam Kher said he has known Daler Mehndi for several decades and, in his personal experience, the singer does not drink alcohol. He appealed for respect for the artist’s long music career and contribution. The controversy has triggered a discussion on artists’ conduct at public events, organisers’ expectations and the manner in which any disagreement should be expressed on stage. It is important to keep in mind the versions of both sides and the available facts in the matter.
