CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lucknow. A political controversy erupted after a comment from the official social media handle of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh over a disputed name entered in the voter list. After objections were raised to the language and tone of the comment, the CEO’s office accepted the mistake, issued a public apology and assured that decorum would be maintained in future communication.
The controversy began with an error in names in the voter list for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election. According to reports, the name “Ramhit Yadav” was wrongly recorded by the software as “Ram ne Yadav ko mara” – “Ram killed Yadav.” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh raised questions over the error and objected to the Election Commission’s functioning and the reliability of the software.
In response, a sarcastic comment was posted from the official X handle of CEO Uttar Pradesh. The post said a computer or software is not casteist. It also referred to another name-related error and used language that many people considered inappropriate and insensitive. Opposition on social media intensified after this.
As the controversy grew, the CEO Uttar Pradesh office issued an apology. The office acknowledged that the language, sentiment and sharp tone of the comments made from the official handle were not in keeping with the dignity of a government institution. It expressed sincere regret to those who were hurt and angered by the comment. It also assured that, in future, communication on official social media platforms would be in polite, restrained and formal language.
The incident has again raised questions over incorrect entries in voter lists and the process for correcting them. According to reports, some names were distorted because names written in English were translated by meaning instead of being transliterated into Hindi. Election officials said such errors would be examined and steps would be taken to prevent them in future.
On a sensitive subject such as elections, both factual clarity and restraint are essential in the social media communication of government institutions. Along with correcting voter list errors, maintaining responsibility in public communication is also important to sustain trust in the electoral system.
