CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In Indian cricket, the Ranji Trophy is regarded as the strong foundation of Test cricket. It is in this domestic competition that players prove their technique, patience and performance in the longer format and stake a claim for a place in the national team. But with the start of the 2026-27 domestic season, questions are being raised over the schedule of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With India A tours being placed in the middle of Ranji Trophy matches, several key players are not available for their state teams. This has intensified the debate over the priority given to domestic cricket and the assessment of players for selection.
The India A schedule is clashing with the Ranji Trophy. The new Ranji Trophy season began on 11 October 2026. At the same time, the final match of the unofficial ODI series between India A and Australia A was also played. Because of this schedule, players such as Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad were not available for their respective state teams. Patidar represents Madhya Pradesh, Padikkal Karnataka and Gaikwad Maharashtra. After this, the India A team’s tour of New Zealand is scheduled to begin on 24 October, where the team will play three multi-day matches. This tour is also taking place during the first phase of the Ranji Trophy. In such a situation, domestic teams may have to take the field without some of their key players.
Why are India A tours important? India A tours are an important part of the Indian cricket system. These matches give players experience of playing in overseas conditions. Fast bowlers get an opportunity to show their ability on different pitches, while batters can test their technique in new conditions. The selectors also get help in assessing players for the future national team. But the question is not about the usefulness of these tours, but about coordination between their scheduling and the Ranji Trophy. If the domestic season is already fixed, efforts should be made while preparing the schedule to ensure that state teams do not repeatedly face the absence of their main players.
What impact does this have on state teams and players? A player’s performance in the Ranji Trophy is important for his career. Runs scored by batters, wickets taken by bowlers and the ability to play under pressure for long periods can play a role in national selection. But when key players are busy with India A assignments, the balance of state teams can be affected.
The absence of a team’s leading batter can weaken the batting order, while an experienced bowler missing a match can affect the bowling attack. This can also influence the competition between teams and the assessment of players’ performances. Although a player’s absence does not by itself decide the outcome of a competition, repeated scheduling clashes need to be considered. Questions have also been raised over the assessment of domestic performances. Former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar have raised issues related to the domestic cricket structure and the evaluation of players’ performances. Performing brilliantly in the Ranji Trophy is an important step towards earning a place in the national team, but to succeed at the international level, a player has to face different kinds of challenges. Therefore, along with domestic numbers, the selection process also has to take into account technique, consistency, the ability to adapt to conditions and the needs of the team.
The BCCI faces the challenge of creating a balance. For the BCCI, it is not easy to coordinate international cricket, India A tours and domestic competitions. The schedules of different teams, the availability of players and the timelines of overseas tours are among the many factors involved. Even so, it is necessary to prepare the schedule while keeping in mind the importance of a major domestic tournament such as the Ranji Trophy. Better planning can prevent India A tours from clashing with domestic cricket, or at least reduce the impact of such clashes. This would give state teams an opportunity to play with stronger combinations and give players adequate chances to prove their talent at the domestic level. The Ranji Trophy is not just a domestic competition; it is an important platform for preparing new players in Indian cricket. If talent for the national team is to be identified through this very platform, then its schedule, competition and player availability will also have to be taken just as seriously.
