Rare Aurora May Illuminate Indian Skies Tonight

CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A powerful solar storm has sparked excitement among astronomers and skywatchers as rare auroral displays, commonly known as the Northern Lights, could become visible from parts of India. The phenomenon is linked to a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun, which has interacted with Earth’s magnetic field. Such events can expand the auroral zone far beyond its usual polar regions, creating a rare opportunity for sightings at lower latitudes.

Experts say the best chances of observing the aurora are in northern and high-altitude regions, particularly areas of Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, where dark skies and minimal light pollution improve visibility. Similar solar storms have previously produced auroral displays over Ladakh, an exceptionally rare occurrence for India.

The ideal viewing window is expected to be after sunset and during the late-night hours, provided weather conditions remain clear. Observers are advised to move away from city lights and look toward the northern horizon. While sightings are not guaranteed, the current geomagnetic activity has increased the possibility of witnessing the spectacular natural light show.

Scientists are also monitoring potential effects of the solar storm on satellite communications, GPS systems, and radio networks. Nevertheless, for sky enthusiasts, the event offers a rare chance to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary celestial spectacles from Indian soil.
