CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Refrigerators are used in almost every household to keep food and beverages fresh for a longer time. The compressor, refrigerant and temperature-control system play an important role in maintaining cooling performance. But the rubber strip fitted around the refrigerator door is equally important. It is called the door gasket. This rubber helps prevent cold air inside the refrigerator from escaping and warm air from entering.

How does the refrigerator gasket work? The flexible rubber fitted around the refrigerator door sticks tightly to the refrigerator body when the door is closed. This creates a seal between the door and the refrigerator. The purpose of this seal is to maintain the cold environment inside and reduce the entry of warm outside air. If the rubber is in good condition, the cooling system has to work relatively less to maintain the temperature inside the refrigerator. However, if the rubber becomes loose, cracks or collects dirt, the seal can become weak.

What happens to cooling when the gasket is damaged? When the refrigerator door seal does not close properly, warm and humid air can enter. This can make it difficult to maintain a stable temperature inside the refrigerator. As a result, the compressor may have to run for longer and power consumption may increase. Higher moisture levels can also, in some situations, lead to more water droplets or ice build-up inside the refrigerator. However, a weak gasket is not the only reason for reduced cooling. Compressor problems, cooling coil issues, thermostat faults, ventilation problems and other technical defects can also be responsible.

How can you check whether the refrigerator gasket is working properly? A simple method can be used to check the door seal. Place a piece of paper between the door and the refrigerator body and close the door. Then slowly pull the paper out. If it comes out easily without any resistance, the seal may be weak in that area. Repeat this check at different points around the door. This household test only gives an early indication. If the problem is clear, it is better to have the refrigerator checked by a technician.

How can the refrigerator gasket be maintained for longer? Clean the rubber regularly with a clean and soft cloth. Remove food residue and dirt stuck to it. Avoid repeatedly slamming the door shut or pulling the rubber. If the gasket is torn, coming out of place or does not form a proper seal even after cleaning, it may need to be replaced.

In conclusion, the refrigerator gasket may appear to be a small part, but it plays an important role in maintaining the internal temperature. A good seal helps the cooling system work efficiently and can reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. Therefore, if refrigerator cooling drops, the condition of the door gasket should also be checked along with other technical causes.
