CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reacted sharply to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s alleged objectionable remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Accusing Congress of violating political decorum, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development work is recorded in people’s hearts and cannot be erased through abusive language. The Chief Minister claimed that voters could hand Congress an even harsher defeat in the coming elections.
The controversy over Kharge’s statement began in Patna, the capital of Bihar, on October 25 during a programme organised to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Dr. Shri Krishna Singh. At the event, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was raising the issue of alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. During this, a person in the audience made a comment about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, Kharge said, “Modi’s father too will go.”
After the statement, the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the Congress president and held protests in several states. BJP leaders described the remark as insulting to the Prime Minister’s late father and demanded an apology from Kharge.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Congress and its allies were crossing the limits of civility in political opposition. She alleged that abusive language is sometimes used against the Prime Minister, and at other times objectionable comments are also made about his late parents.
According to Rekha Gupta, the Prime Minister’s work and the public support for him cannot be ended by such remarks. She said people keep watch on the conduct of leaders and political parties should put forward their views in a dignified manner. The Chief Minister warned that if such language continues to be used, Congress may face an even bigger defeat in the coming elections.
There is already a political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list. Congress has been raising questions over alleged irregularities in the process, while the BJP is registering its protest over the Congress president’s remark.
After Kharge’s statement, allegations and counter-allegations between the two parties have intensified. For now, the controversy remains at the centre of political rhetoric. What stance voters take in the coming elections will become clear only through the election results.
