CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Food poisoning caused by contaminated food or water can lead to stomach pain and cramps, along with diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and fever. The nature of the symptoms depends on the germ causing the infection.

When stomach pain and diarrhoea occur, the most important step is to prevent the body from losing water and electrolytes. Keep taking small amounts of water, fluids and, as needed, ORS. If diarrhoea or vomiting is severe, ORS helps replace the water and salts lost from the body.

It is not advisable to take painkillers or antibiotics on your own for the pain. Treatment can vary depending on the different causes of food poisoning, and in many cases the illness resolves on its own. In some situations, medicines used to stop diarrhoea may also not be appropriate, especially when there is high fever or blood in the stool.

If diarrhoea lasts for more than three days, there is high fever, water does not stay down because of repeated vomiting, blood appears in the stool, or signs of dehydration such as reduced urination, dry mouth and dizziness are seen, contact a doctor immediately. Remember: stomach pain is not always caused by food poisoning. If the pain is severe or persistent, medical examination is necessary.
