CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CNN Central News and Network – ITDC India ePress | ITDC News, Bhopal: The Nagqu region was the worst affected, with the epicentre of the earthquake located near Nagqu city in the northern part of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The area is at a high altitude and is relatively sparsely populated. According to initial reports, the earthquake damaged hundreds of houses, with at least 339 homes reported damaged or collapsed. After the quake, people rushed out of their homes in panic. Cracks appeared in buildings at several places. The administration has intensified inspections and rescue work in the affected areas.

More than 12,000 people have been moved to safety. Police, fire brigade teams and personnel from other emergency services have been deployed in the relief and rescue operation. According to officials, more than 12,000 people were shifted to safer places. Temporary shelters, tents, blankets, warm clothes and other essential items are being arranged for affected families.

Relief work remains challenging because of low temperatures in the high-altitude region. The administration has appealed to people to wait for safety inspections before returning to damaged buildings. Concern has grown because of aftershocks. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, 413 tremors were recorded after the main earthquake. The strongest aftershock was reported at magnitude 4.3. Continued tremors have increased anxiety among people in the affected areas. The earthquake also triggered rockfalls on some mountain routes. Movement had to be controlled on affected sections of the national highway so that rescue teams would not face difficulty in moving in and out. Officials have continued monitoring seismic activity in the region.

The administration has issued instructions to speed up relief work. Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed authorities to rescue affected people, ensure treatment for the injured and accelerate relief operations. The challenge before the administration is not only to provide medical assistance to the injured, but also to provide safe shelter to displaced families amid the cold and high-altitude conditions. Rescue teams are currently assessing damage in the affected areas. The number of dead and injured may change, as inspections and relief operations are continuing in difficult-to-access areas.
