CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization has issued a warning for people who repeatedly take painkillers for pain or fever. CDSCO has advised against the repeated or prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics without medical advice. According to the regulator, improper use of such medicines can increase the risk of kidney-related complications.
CDSCO has specifically urged caution for people who already have kidney disease or are at risk of impaired kidney function. Extra caution is also necessary in cases of dehydration, cardiovascular disease, and when painkillers are taken along with certain other medicines. The regulator has advised doctors to use painkillers at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest necessary duration. If pain, fever or other symptoms recur repeatedly, people have been advised to seek medical examination instead of self-medicating.
CDSCO has also warned against the self-use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are not effective in common viral infections, and their unnecessary use can worsen the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Most non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs fall under Schedule H and most antibiotics under Schedule H-1, for which prescription-related rules apply for sale.
