President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has suffered a major political setback in the US midterm elections. The Democratic Party has secured a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Victories by Democratic candidates even in states traditionally considered Republican strongholds have made the election results historic. It is being described as one of the Republican Party’s biggest midterm election defeats in nearly 50 years.
In this election, the Republican Party had power, the president’s backing and substantial financial resources for campaigning. Republicans and organisations linked to them spent billions of dollars on the campaign. Despite this, the party could not retain voters’ trust. According to an analysis by The Washington Post, Republicans outspent Democrats in competitive electoral areas, but that advantage was not reflected in the results.
Inflation, rising prices of everyday goods, the war with Iran and the policies of the Trump administration are being seen as key reasons behind the defeat. In post-election surveys, a large number of voters cited the rising cost of living as an important basis for their vote. A decline in Republican support was also recorded among young, Hispanic and Black voters.
During the campaign, Trump had appealed to voters to view the election as a referendum on his leadership. After the results, questions have begun to emerge within the party over candidate selection, leadership and electoral strategy. Democratic control of both chambers of Congress will now pose a new challenge to Trump’s legislative agenda.
