CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has targeted the Congress over delimitation and a proposed Bill linked to women’s reservation. Rijiju alleged that the government repeatedly invited the Congress for talks, but the party did not come forward for discussion. He said the government had called the Congress for talks more than 10 times.
Rijiju claims three letters were written to Kharge. According to Rijiju, he wrote to Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on March 16, March 26 and April 12, 2026. He said he spoke to Kharge several times and also personally met Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to invite him for discussions. The minister claimed that despite repeated requests, the Congress did not give any date for talks.
Rijiju said the government also held discussions with other political parties after waiting for dialogue with the Congress. These included the Samajwadi Party, DMK, YSR Congress Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), AIMIM and Biju Janata Dal. According to him, these parties raised their concerns over issues related to delimitation and the representation of states.
On the other hand, the Congress has asked the government whether any new proposal has been prepared on delimitation or whether the government is preparing to bring back the Constitution amendment Bill that had earlier been defeated in the Lok Sabha. The Congress has also demanded that an all-party meeting be convened before moving ahead with the Bill and that the concerns of opposition parties be discussed collectively.
The political debate over delimitation and women’s reservation has intensified. The Constitution amendment Bill linked to delimitation could not be passed in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026. Dialogue between the government and the opposition, representation of states and implementation of women’s reservation remain at the centre of the political debate. Clarity on the proposal and building consensus with opposition parties will be important in the next phase of the process.
