Awareness and access to education have expanded rapidly in recent years. According to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), education loans in the country saw an increase of approximately 17% in 2022-23, reaching ₹96,847 crore. This reflects the growing interest in education and the availability of financial assistance. In Madhya Pradesh, particularly in cities like Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur, the trend of students taking loans for higher education is also rising. However, the question remains: does financial assistance alone ensure quality and job-oriented education for students?
One of the key reasons for the increase in education loans in Madhya Pradesh is the need for financial support among many families, especially economically weaker families, to pursue higher education. While education loans offer these families an opportunity to access higher education, financial aid alone is not enough. Attention must also be given to the quality of higher education institutions, teaching methods, curriculum relevance, and employability. Education’s purpose should go beyond just providing degrees; it should prepare students for life.
Many colleges in the state still lack basic facilities and quality teaching. While some colleges in urban areas have better resources, this is not the case for institutions in rural areas. Students there do not receive quality education and resources, which affects their educational and professional skills.
Simply providing degrees does not secure students’ futures. In today’s job market, students need vocational skills and technical knowledge. Programs like ‘Skill India,’ initiated by the government, aim to equip students practically, but effective integration into the education system is needed. Educational institutions should collaborate with industries to provide students with an education and training that not only grants them a degree but also equips them with skills that make them employable.
The benefit of this increase in education loans will be realized only if the state government, educational institutions, and industries work together to develop a system that not only provides financial assistance but also enhances the quality of education and employment prospects for students.
