CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: India’s festive season is traditionally a period of strong consumer demand and increased business activity. For millions of small and medium-sized sellers, online marketplaces such as Amazon and Flipkart offer an important opportunity to expand sales and reach customers across the country. However, rising platform charges, stricter cancellation penalties and higher logistics costs are creating fresh challenges for sellers just as festive demand is expected to accelerate.
Recent changes in marketplace policies have raised concerns among vendors who operate on already narrow profit margins. Sellers may face penalties for delayed dispatches or cancelled orders, while packaging and delivery-related expenses are also increasing. Even when individual charges appear relatively small, their cumulative impact can significantly reduce the earnings from low-priced products.
For instance, a seller offering a kurta for ₹799 on Flipkart could face penalties if the order is not dispatched within the prescribed timeline and is subsequently cancelled. Amazon has also revised cancellation charges for certain categories of sellers. Such measures may encourage timely fulfilment, but they can become financially burdensome when delays occur due to circumstances beyond a seller’s control.
The Question of Accountability
One of the major concerns raised by sellers is the responsibility for logistics failures. If a courier partner does not arrive for a scheduled pickup, should the seller bear the financial consequences? Sellers argue that proving their readiness to dispatch an order and challenging an imposed penalty can be a complicated process. A fair grievance-redressal mechanism is therefore essential.
E-commerce companies have a legitimate responsibility to ensure timely deliveries and protect customer confidence. Repeated cancellations and delayed shipments can damage the shopping experience. However, strict enforcement should distinguish between deliberate negligence and operational failures caused by logistics partners or other circumstances outside a seller’s control.
Small Sellers Face the Greatest Pressure
The impact of rising costs is particularly severe for small businesses selling affordable products. Their margins are often limited, and expenses related to commissions, advertising, packaging, storage and transportation already consume a substantial share of revenue. Additional penalties can turn a seemingly successful sales season into a period of financial strain.
The challenge is not limited to large marketplaces. Independent online sellers also depend on logistics companies, and additional surcharges on shipments can further increase their operating costs. This makes cost management increasingly difficult for businesses that are trying to compete with larger brands.
Growth Must Be Shared Fairly
India’s online festive market is expected to expand significantly, reflecting the growing popularity of digital shopping. However, higher sales volumes alone cannot be considered a sign of a healthy e-commerce ecosystem. Sustainable growth requires a fair distribution of opportunities, costs and responsibilities among platforms, logistics providers and sellers.
E-commerce companies should provide advance notice of policy changes, maintain transparent penalty structures and ensure that sellers have access to quick and impartial dispute-resolution systems. Penalties should be based on verified responsibility rather than imposed automatically.
The festive season should create prosperity across the entire digital commerce chain. If small sellers are unable to protect their margins despite rising sales, the benefits of e-commerce growth will remain uneven. A marketplace becomes stronger when its sellers are financially secure, its customers are satisfied and its business practices are transparent. Protecting seller confidence is therefore not merely a matter of commercial fairness; it is essential for the long-term health of India’s digital economy.
