Recent events in Manipur highlight the state’s complex social and political situation. The arrest of Kanan Singh, a member of Arambai Tenggol, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has further escalated the already prevailing tensions in the state. Since this arrest, incidents of violence have increased in Imphal and surrounding areas, forcing the administration to take strict measures such as imposing curfews and restricting internet services.
The long-standing ethnic conflict in Manipur has destabilized the state. Since May 2023, more than 260 people have been killed in clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, and thousands have been displaced. This situation has severely impacted law and order in the state, leading the central government to impose President’s Rule in February 2025.
The solution to this problem cannot be achieved by law and order measures alone. A comprehensive approach is needed that takes into account social, political, and economic aspects. Firstly, to restore peace and stability in the state, it is essential to promote dialogue among all communities. The government should provide a fair and transparent platform where all parties can express their concerns and demands.
Secondly, the administration must ensure that the rule of law is applied equally to everyone. Any individual or group involved in violence should be punished according to the law, regardless of their community. This will restore confidence in law and order and help prevent future incidents of violence.
Thirdly, promoting economic development and employment opportunities is also necessary. In a state like Manipur, where unemployment and poverty rates are high, economic inequality is a major cause of conflict. The government should encourage local industries and initiate skill development programs for youth so that they can access better employment opportunities.
Finally, promoting education and cultural understanding is important. Cultural and educational exchanges among all communities will enhance mutual understanding and tolerance, which will aid in establishing long-term peace.
The current situation in Manipur is concerning, but it is not impossible to improve it by taking the right steps. The government, local administration, and civil society must work together to ensure lasting peace and development in Manipur. Although this may be a long and challenging process, steps taken in the right direction will certainly yield positive results.
