CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai. Important figures have emerged through an RTI response on the number of teachers from reserved categories at IIT Bombay. According to September 2026 data, the institute has a total of 1,225 sanctioned teaching posts, of which 775 are filled and 450 are vacant. The filled posts include a total of 84 teachers belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections.

According to the RTI, IIT Bombay has a total of 412 professors. Of these, five are from the Scheduled Castes and six from the Other Backward Classes, while there is not a single professor from the Scheduled Tribes category. At the associate professor and assistant professor levels, there are a total of 363 teachers. Of these, 29 are from the Scheduled Castes, eight from the Scheduled Tribes and 35 from the Other Backward Classes.

As per the RTI figures, representation of teachers from reserved categories is higher in entry-level academic posts than at the professor level. The figures have come at a time when there is an ongoing debate over representation of reserved categories and the recruitment process at IIT Bombay. Student organisations have cited these figures to demand increased representation in the institute.

The RTI application was filed by All India OBC Students Association president Goud Kiran Kumar. The data also show a large number of vacant teaching posts in the institute. However, the figures disclosed in the RTI only reflect current representation and, by themselves, do not allow any final conclusion to be drawn on the reasons behind the recruitment process or on any violation of rules.
