CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: RTR flyover reopens after crack repairs, heavy vehicles still barred

New Delhi. In the national capital Delhi, the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover has been reopened for light vehicles after repair work was completed. However, heavy vehicles have not been allowed to use the flyover for now. According to officials, the necessary safety checks and structural tests will be carried out before clearance is given to these vehicles.

Flyover was closed after cracks were found

Cracks and defects in the concrete were detected on October 20 on the Vasant Vihar-bound lane of Delhi’s old RTR flyover. During inspection, iron reinforcement bars were also found exposed at some places. Keeping safety in mind, traffic on this route was stopped, which increased vehicle pressure on nearby roads and led to congestion for commuters.

The Public Works Department (PWD) carried out repairs on the damaged portions. After this, the strength of the concrete and the safety of the flyover were assessed. Following the inspection, it was decided to restore the movement of light vehicles.

Heavy vehicles will have to wait for now

At present, cars and two-wheelers are allowed to pass through the flyover, while trucks and other heavy vehicles are being diverted to alternative routes. According to officials, before heavy vehicles are allowed to move, the capacity of the repaired sections and the structural safety will be assessed. This may take around seven to eight days.

Height barriers have been installed at the entry point to stop heavy vehicles. Traffic police personnel have also been deployed to ensure compliance with the restrictions.

Traffic arrangements to be monitored

The RTR flyover is an important route for travel between Delhi airport, Vasant Vihar and South Delhi. Its closure had increased traffic pressure on nearby roads. Reopening it for light vehicles is expected to provide relief to commuters.

The PWD is also conducting a structural audit to ensure the long-term safety of the flyover. A decision on allowing heavy vehicles will be taken on the basis of the inspection results and safety assessment.
