CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Travellers heading from Vasant Vihar in Delhi towards Indira Gandhi International Airport have got some relief. South Delhi’s old Rao Tularam (RTR) flyover has been reopened for light vehicles after repairs. Under the arrangement that began on Monday evening, October 26, two-wheelers and cars will be able to use the flyover. However, the restriction on trucks and other heavy vehicles will remain in place for now.
The old RTR flyover had been closed as a precaution on October 20 after cracks were found on the road. During inspection, problems including damaged concrete at some places and exposed iron reinforcement bars were observed. After this, the Public Works Department (PWD) began repair work. Once repairs were completed, the strength of the road was checked. Officials decided, on the basis of the required tests, to allow limited movement of light vehicles. The flyover was built in 2009.
For now, only light vehicles are allowed on the flyover. Heavy vehicles will be sent through other routes. Traffic police personnel are being deployed to ensure compliance with the restriction. Arrangements are also being made to install height barriers to prevent heavy vehicles from entering the flyover.
During the closure of the flyover, vehicles travelling from the airport, Gurugram and Dwarka towards Vasant Vihar and South Delhi had to use service roads and alternative routes. This was leading to long queues and traffic congestion during peak hours.
With the reopening of the flyover, travellers, taxi drivers and daily commuters are expected to get relief. Meanwhile, the PWD is also conducting a structural audit of the entire flyover so that its condition can be assessed and further repair or strengthening measures can be taken as required.
