CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Chandigarh. In the past 48 hours, rumours triggered tension among students on two university campuses in Punjab. At a private university in Rajpura, a large number of students came out of their hostels after an alleged ghost rumour began spreading. A commotion followed on the campus, and police had to reach the spot to bring the situation under control.
According to reports, the rumour began after claims that hostel doors were being knocked on at night. Later, claims spread on social media and among students that two students had died on the campus and that their spirits were wandering there. Tension continued for some time even after police arrived.
The next day, a rumour spread on social media at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar alleging that a girl student had been raped and had later died by suicide. A large number of students then staged a protest. During the protest, incidents of vandalism and arson were also reported on the campus, and traffic on the Amritsar-Delhi highway was affected.
Police have not confirmed the claims related to the alleged rape or suicide of the student. The university administration has also described the claims as baseless. Police and the administration are investigating how the rumours spread and why a violent situation developed after them.
