CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Saima Wazed, daughter of former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has resigned as Regional Director for the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Region. She sent her resignation on Wednesday to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Her term was originally until 2029, but she stepped down before completing it.
Saima’s resignation comes at a time when the WHO and Bangladesh’s anti-corruption agency are investigating her over alleged financial irregularities and other allegations. The WHO has alleged financial fraud linked to expenses for a China visit and alleged misrepresentation of academic qualifications. Saima has denied the allegations. She described the issue related to travel expenses as an administrative error by her staff and said information about her honorary doctorate had been provided to the WHO leadership.
In her resignation, Saima said she had lost trust in the WHO leadership. She alleged that she had been prevented from working effectively. She also said her financial situation had become extremely difficult because she had not received her salary for nearly a year.
