CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Salman Khan on Box Office Failures: “If Films Aren’t Working, the Fault Is Ours”
Salman Khan’s much-awaited film ‘Sikandar’ is all set to hit theatres soon. Expectations are high that the film will make a grand impact at the box office during Eid. The film’s story and powerful performances have already created a buzz.
Recently, while interacting with the media during the promotions, Salman Khan answered several questions with honesty. He also shared his opinion on the underperformance of Bollywood films at the box office.
🎥 Salman Khan’s Bold Take on Bollywood’s Box Office Slump
Speaking candidly, Salman said,
“If bad films are made, how will they work? Most of the films being made aren’t good, and that includes my own. It’s simple—if a film is good, it will run. If it’s bad, it won’t. There’s no doubt that if terrible films are made, they will flop.”
Taking responsibility for the failure of films, Salman added,
“It’s the star’s job to bring audiences to the theatres. A true star is the one who attracts crowds just by appearing on the poster. If the films don’t do well, the accountability lies with the star.”
He also reflected on the decline in script quality, stating that a major reason for the lack of good content in Hindi cinema is weak writing. According to him, unless more attention is given to screenwriting, the industry will continue to suffer from a lack of quality films.
✍️ Salman Khan on Film Writing
Speaking on the current writing trends, Salman said,
“Don’t assume that the audience won’t understand. These days, writers are writing for themselves. They’re competing with directors, and producers are racing each other. Everyone just wants to show how a film is made. But a film should be made for the audience. Write it in a way that if you were sitting in the front row, you’d enjoy it. Don’t underestimate the audience—they’re very intelligent.”
🎬 Salman’s Advice to Filmmakers & Producers
Salman gave a clear message to producers and directors:
“Audiences have evolved. Thanks to OTT platforms, they have access to global cinema and a wide variety of genres. Only make a film if you have a great script. Don’t plan it based on the availability of your favorite star, their dates, or budget. Films should be made for the right reasons—not just to follow trends or in haste.”
