CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal/ Ujjain: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has taken a historic initiative by renaming Vikram University, Ujjain, as Samrat Vikramaditya University.
This decision not only honors the cultural and educational legacy of Ujjain but also brings new energy to the state’s education system.
The Chief Minister made this announcement on March 30, 2025, during the 29th Convocation Ceremony of Vikram University. Following this, an emergency meeting was convened at the university on the initiative of Executive Council Member Rajesh Singh Kushwaha, where a proposal to change the university’s name was passed.

The proposal was subsequently passed as a bill in the State Assembly on August 4, 2025, and now awaits formal approval by the Governor to come into legal effect.
Vikram University, established on March 1, 1957, is named after the legendary ruler Samrat Vikramaditya, whose glorious history is deeply rooted in Indian heritage. The university has long been a center of academic excellence, frequented by renowned scholars and national leaders.
Executive Council Member Arpan Bhardwaj, the Vice Chancellor, and the university community have expressed immense joy and pride, calling the decision a historic moment.
This renaming is seen as a powerful step toward granting Ujjain global recognition.
