CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress  /  ITDC News Bhopal  / Mumbai   :  Maharashtra MLA Sanjay Gaikwad has stirred major controversy after defending an alleged assault on a canteen staff member, attributing his actions to what he termed a “cultural invasion” by South Indians. In a widely circulated video, Gaikwad is seen justifying the physical altercation by claiming that South Indians have “spoiled Maharashtra’s culture” by introducing practices like running dance bars.

The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from across the political spectrum and civil society, with many accusing the legislator of promoting regional discrimination and hate speech. Various South Indian community organizations have called for an apology and legal action, citing the remarks as deeply offensive and divisive.

Human rights activists and opposition leaders condemned the assault and the communal narrative Gaikwad used to justify it. Legal experts suggest that such rhetoric not only violates the spirit of the Indian Constitution but may also fall under hate speech laws.

While Gaikwad has refused to apologize, pressure is mounting on the Shiv Sena leadership to act against the controversial lawmaker. As communal and regional tensions simmer, the incident has once again raised questions about accountability and tolerance in Indian politics.
