CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: The death of noted Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Gupta is a major loss for the film industry. With the 59-year-old director’s death, one of his ambitious film plans also remained unfinished. He wanted to make ‘Kaante 2’, a sequel to his much-discussed 2002 film ‘Kaante’, with actor Sanjay Dutt. Gupta and Dutt had also recently discussed the film.

Initial work had been done on the sequel’s story. In a conversation in May 2026, Sanjay Gupta had said that he and Sanjay Dutt had prepared the initial story of ‘Kaante 2’. He planned to begin work on the film’s screenplay. He had also said that the legal hurdles linked to the original film had been cleared, paving the way for creative work on the sequel to move forward. Gupta wanted actors such as Abhishek Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Varma and Ali Fazal to appear alongside Sanjay Dutt in the new film. However, this was his proposed list of actors, not the official cast of the film.

‘Kaante’ had created a distinct identity. Released in 2002, the film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Kumar Gaurav and Lucky Ali in key roles. The story revolved around six criminals who plan a bank robbery. Based on the world of action and crime, the film earned a special identity among audiences.

Sanjay Dutt promised to complete the dream. After Sanjay Gupta’s death, Sanjay Dutt shared an emotional message, calling him his brother and a part of his family. He said the two had recently been discussing ‘Kaante 2’. Sanjay Dutt also expressed his resolve to fulfil the dream of making the film in memory of his friend.
