New Delhi. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut has tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court over his remarks concerning Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and the judiciary. In his affidavit, Raut said he had no intention of hurting the dignity of the court or the judiciary. Expressing regret over his comments, he requested the court to accept his apology and end the contempt proceedings against him.

The matter began after Raut made remarks about the judiciary following Chief Justice Surya Kant’s decision not to meet a delegation of opposition leaders. The opposition delegation wanted to discuss issues related to the Election Commission. The Supreme Court Bar Association filed a contempt petition over Raut’s remarks. Journalist Nikhil Wagle is also an accused in the case.

During the hearing on October 28, a Supreme Court bench directed Raut to appear in person at 2 pm on November 17, 2026. The court said the matter was linked to the dignity of the entire judiciary. During the hearing, no lawyer was present on Raut’s behalf, and his reply was also not available on the court record.

Nikhil Wagle has also tendered an unconditional apology. He has been allowed to appear through video conferencing at the next hearing. The Supreme Court will now consider Raut’s apology at the hearing on November 17 and decide on further proceedings.
