CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: When an engineer born in Khandwa dreamed of taking technology to ordinary people, computers were not in every hand as they are today. This vision drew Santosh Choubey from engineering towards education and science communication. Over time, the same journey took him to literature, Hindi and international cultural platforms. On Monday, at the first convocation ceremony of Babu Dinesh Singh University, Garhwa, he was conferred an honorary doctorate.
The honour is not for any single achievement. The university underlined his contributions to education, science communication, social entrepreneurship, literature and creative writing as the basis for the award. Born in Khandwa on September 22, 1955, Santosh Choubey began his professional journey with a background in engineering and administrative services. Even after being selected for the Indian Engineering Service and the Indian Administrative Service, his work was not confined to a job. In 1985, he founded the All India Society for Electronics and Computer Technology.
At that time, computer technology was far removed from ordinary Indian society. Choubey began working to connect technology with education and employment. His book “Computer: Ek Parichay” made it easier to understand computers in Hindi. Alongside this, he led art and science groups for the popularisation of science in remote parts of the country.
But Choubey’s identity was not limited to that of a science communicator. He also made literature a parallel path in his creative journey. As a poet, storyteller and novelist, he has published seven short story collections, four novels and four poetry collections. His novels include “Raag Kedar”, “Kya Pata Comrade Mohan”, “Jal Tarang” and “Sapnon Ki Duniya Mein Black Hole”. For “Jal Tarang”, he received the Shailesh Matiyani Award and the international Valley of Words Award.
His literary engagement extends beyond writing to editing. Through projects such as “Katha Madhya Pradesh”, “Katha Desh”, “Katha Bhopal” and “Vigyan Katha Kosh”, he brought a large creative world of Hindi into documented form. Another important milestone in this journey is “Vishwarang”. Started in Bhopal in 2019, the international event grew as an effort to give Hindi language and Indian culture a global platform. It has been stated that more than 70 countries are now associated with it.
Santosh Choubey has received several honours in India and abroad for his contributions to literature, Hindi and culture. Prominent among them are the Vishva Hindi Shikhar Samman, Bharat Gaurav Samman, Vatayan UK International Shikhar Samman, Lifetime Achievement Award and the Max Muller International Alankaran. The honorary doctorate is certainly a new title of honour for him, but the story of his journey is much longer. What began with explaining technology in Hindi reached literature and then turned into an effort to take Hindi to the world. When he celebrates his 71st birthday, this journey of more than seven decades of his life will be recorded with another achievement.
