CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The deadly building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students living in private paying guest accommodations. After a five-storey building operated as a “Hostel Daze” PG collapsed, killing seven people, students staying in another PG linked to the same operator say they are now living in fear.
Several first-year Delhi University students reportedly paid substantial security deposits and advance rent shortly before the tragedy. Some students said they had deposited around Rs 50,000, while the PG operator has allegedly stopped responding to their calls. This has left students facing a difficult choice between remaining in an accommodation they fear may be unsafe and moving elsewhere without knowing whether their money will be returned.
Students from different states have described sleepless nights and growing anxiety after witnessing the collapse. Many say finding another affordable accommodation close to their colleges is difficult, while university hostel seats are limited.
The incident has also brought scrutiny of building maintenance and construction practices in the area. Police have arrested the PG operator and a labour contractor as part of the investigation into the collapse.
The tragedy has intensified demands for comprehensive safety inspections and accountability across Delhi’s student accommodation hubs.
