CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A significant hearing is underway in the Supreme Court today concerning laws related to religious sites. The case pertains to the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which is being challenged through multiple petitions.

The primary objective of this Act is to maintain the status of religious sites as they existed on August 15, 1947. Under this law, any alteration in the nature of a religious site is considered unconstitutional.

Several prominent petitions have been filed against this law. Petitioners like Ashwini Upadhyay, Vishwa Bhadra Pujari Mahasangh, and Subramanian Swamy argue that the Act violates Articles 14, 15, 21, 25, and 26 of the Constitution.

On the other hand, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has supported the law, stating that it is essential to maintain religious harmony in the country. They believe that repealing this law could lead to disputes over religious sites, impacting the nation’s social and communal unity.

The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to clarify its stance on this matter. However, the government has yet to respond.

If this law is repealed, it could spark a wave of disputes over religious sites, potentially affecting the country’s secular fabric and social harmony.
