CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Changes in memory and thinking ability are considered normal with ageing, but in some elderly people the brain remains relatively sharp despite advancing age. Scientists are trying to understand the changes that take place in the brains of such people so that the causes of age-related cognitive decline can be identified.
In recent research, scientists have found that short-distance neural connectivity in the brain during ageing may play a role in maintaining cognitive ability. Despite age-related changes in brain tissue, better connections have been observed along with stronger performance linked to language and thinking ability.
Scientists are focusing not only on the structure of the brain but also on lifestyle. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, social contact and remaining mentally active may help maintain brain health with age. Research has also shown a link between healthy eating, regular activities and better cognitive health.
However, no single habit can be considered a guarantee of a sharp mind. Scientists are still trying to understand how genetics, lifestyle and brain structure together influence cognitive ability with age.
