CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Back and waist pain among children and adolescents is often linked to heavy school bags, but a recent Indian study has also identified excessive screen use as an important factor. The study included 1,225 schoolchildren, of whom 38.5 percent reported back pain in the previous one month.

According to the study, back pain was found to be more closely associated with children who used mobile phones for one hour or more every day. Computer use was also found to be linked to pain. Experts say sitting in the wrong posture for long periods while using a mobile phone or computer, and remaining in the same position continuously, can put additional pressure on the body’s muscles and spine. However, this does not mean that school bags no longer play a role. The same study also observed a link between back pain and bags weighing more than 10 percent of a child’s body weight. Another 2026 study found incorrect sitting posture and carrying a bag on one shoulder to be associated with back pain among adolescents.

Children should be prevented from sitting continuously on mobile phones or computers for long periods, encouraged to walk and move around at intervals, and made to maintain correct posture while studying or using screens. If a child has persistent or severe back pain, if daily activities are affected because of the pain, or if pain begins after an injury, medical examination should be sought.
