CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of Global Fatty Liver Day, screening and awareness camps were organized in government health institutions. At the National Health Mission (NHM) office in Madhya Pradesh, a health camp was also held for officials, employees, and their family members.
The camps included waist measurement, weight, BMI checks, as well as collection of personal and family history related to hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle habits.
The government is running the Healthy Liver Mission for the screening of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). This mission focuses on awareness, early detection, treatment, and prevention of liver-related diseases. It was launched by the Governor and Chief Minister of the state.
As part of the mission, frontline health workers are conducting preliminary screenings for citizens above 30 years of age, measuring their BMI, CBAC score, and waist circumference. If BMI exceeds 23, and waist size is above 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men, the individuals are referred to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs or nearby health institutions for further testing.
In these camps, BMI screening was conducted for 2,394 individuals, of which 663 had a high BMI. Out of 977 screened men, 270 had a high waist measurement; among 1,417 women, 477 exceeded the standard measurement.
Suspected NAFLD cases identified during initial screenings by ASHA workers are further examined at health institutions by Community Health Officers (CHOs) and other medical personnel. Based on FIB-4 score, tests like platelet count, SGOT (AST), SGPT (ALT), and FibroScan will be conducted under medical advice.
Apart from screening and testing, the campaign promotes nutritious home-based diets and advises avoiding alcohol and smoking to maintain liver health.
