CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Kerala has reported its second Nipah virus-related death in Palakkad district, prompting the state health department to issue a high alert across six surrounding districts — Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Wayanad. The victim, a 38-year-old man, succumbed after showing symptoms consistent with Nipah infection, and his samples tested positive at the National Institute of Virology.
Health authorities have begun extensive contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, and surveillance in the affected regions. Over 200 people have been identified as contacts, and several have been moved to quarantine facilities. Emergency response teams are also being deployed to monitor the situation, especially in high-risk zones.
The government has urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel to the affected areas, stay vigilant about symptoms like fever, headache, and respiratory distress, and strictly follow health advisories. Hospitals have been instructed to strengthen infection control protocols, and rapid response teams have been activated.
This marks the second fatal case in the current outbreak, reviving memories of previous Nipah outbreaks in Kerala, which had high fatality rates. Health officials emphasize that early detection, rapid isolation, and community cooperation are critical to prevent a wider spread of the deadly virus.
