CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Section 163 imposed in Delhi, gatherings of over five banned

New Delhi. In view of proposed demonstrations on Gandhi Jayanti, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita is in force in the New Delhi district. Under the order, public gatherings of five or more people, processions, demonstrations, sit-ins and picketing are banned without prior written permission. Police have appealed to people to comply with the restrictions.

According to Delhi Police, the restrictions also bar sloganeering and speeches without permission. Apart from weapons, carrying items such as banners, posters, sticks, swords, batons and bricks or stones is also prohibited. Action may be taken under the relevant law for violation of the order.

Police have not granted permission for the proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Some political parties, student organisations and social organisations are likely to take part in the protest. The protesters’ key demands include action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and answers to questions raised over the special intensive revision of the voter list. The Election Commission has described the voter list revision process as being in accordance with the prescribed rules.

As part of the security arrangements, additional police and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in the New Delhi district. Traffic has been regulated and diverted on some routes in and around Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street, Connaught Place, Patel Chowk and nearby areas. In addition, entry and exit at 11 Metro stations have been closed until further orders.
