CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Security overhaul after Naxalism ends, 1,550 personnel to be withdrawn

Preparations are under way for major changes in the security arrangement in Chhattisgarh after the end of Naxalism. After a review of the security being provided to around 400 leaders in the state, a decision has been taken to recall 1,550 personnel. The move is estimated to save the government exchequer about Rs 150 crore annually.

State Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has said the decision to change the security arrangement has been taken. According to him, after the influence of Naxalism ended, the need for security provided in view of earlier circumstances is being reassessed. Under this process, personnel deployed for the security of leaders will be recalled.

Meanwhile, state Congress president Deepak Baij has called for caution over the decision. He said changes in the security arrangement should not be made in haste. Before taking any decision related to the security of leaders, it is necessary to properly assess the current threat and the related circumstances.

Under this proposal, a large number of security personnel may be sent back to their original postings. This will increase the availability of the police force and allow security resources to be used afresh. However, detailed information on the process of withdrawing security and its final scope is yet to emerge.
