CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Security was tightened outside Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday, 27 October, amid the continuing dispute over the demand to restore student union elections. Police and other security personnel were deployed after left-wing organisations called for a protest at 3 pm. Information also emerged that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) had been imposed to maintain law and order. However, until afternoon, the proposed protest site appeared deserted and no protesters were seen there.
Demand to restore student union elections: Student union elections have not been held at Jamia for a long time. Student organisations are demanding restoration of the elections and the announcement of a clear timeline for voting. Protests and a hunger strike began on 12 October over the issue. The protesting students’ demands also include withdrawal of disciplinary action and an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel.
Dispute not resolved despite administration’s order: On 26 October, the university administration issued an order stating that elections would be held 15 days after the student union constitution receives approval. It also said suspensions and show-cause notices issued during the agitation would be withdrawn, and a committee would be formed to examine the conduct of security personnel. However, the protesting students are not satisfied because the election date and the timeline for approving the constitution have not been made clear. They say their main demand cannot be considered fulfilled until a definite schedule for the election process is announced.
Alert increased after police action: Earlier, on 26 October, tension had developed outside the university between police and protesting students. Several students were detained, and after movement was stopped at the main gates, some students entered the campus by climbing over the gate. Security was increased around the university after this.
All eyes on the movement: The university administration has asked for the protest to end, while students want a clear assurance on their demands. In this situation, attention remains on the proposed protest on Tuesday and the administration’s next action. For now, no definite date has been announced for the student union elections.
