Senior leader and senator of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Taj Haider, passed away on Tuesday in Karachi at the age of 83, his family confirmed. According to a family statement, Haider had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi, where he breathed his last.
His funeral prayers will be held today after Zuhrain prayers at Masjid-o-Imambargah Yasrab, Phase 4, Defence Society, Karachi. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the veteran PPP leader.
According to Geo News, the information was shared by Haider’s wife. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the PPP, also expressed heartfelt condolences over the death of the party’s central secretary general, Taj Haider. PPP’s Sindh provincial secretary general, Waqar Mehdi, also paid tribute, stating that Haider was one of the founding members of the PPP.
Taj Haider was born on March 8, 1942, in Kota, Rajasthan, India. Following the Partition, his family migrated to Pakistan. He received his early education at Government High School, Ranchore Lines, Karachi, and after completing higher education, he ventured into the world of fine arts. He wrote stories for television serials, contributed thought-provoking columns to various newspapers, and even acted in his own drama serial, “Abla Pa.”
Haider began his political journey in 1967 when he joined the PPP. Paying tribute to him, Bilawal Bhutto said that Taj Haider’s political, social, and literary contributions will never be forgotten. He added that Haider’s lifelong struggle and sacrifices for democracy would continue to inspire future generations.
Fazil Jamili, President of the Karachi Press Club, also expressed deep sorrow, calling him a true comrade and a dedicated democrat.
Taj Haider was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2012 for his contributions in the field of science and was also honored with the 13th PTV Award in 2006 for Best Drama Serial Writer.
