Violence broke out during action by security forces against protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). At least seven people were killed in firing and alleged drone attacks in Rawalakot on Thursday, November 5, while 18 others are reported to be seriously injured. There are also reports that children were among the dead. However, the number of casualties and the deaths of children could not be independently confirmed.

The United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) has alleged that Pakistani security forces targeted sit-ins at the Matiyalmera bus terminal, Umar Farooq Chowk and nearby areas. According to the organisation, heavy machine guns, armoured vehicles and drones were used during the action. It has also raised fears that a fire broke out after an alleged drone attack on a residential house and that four children were killed in it. The organisation has demanded an independent investigation into the claim.

Tension spread across several areas during the action in Rawalakot. According to local reports, restrictions were also imposed on communication services, making it difficult to gather information from the scene. There was no immediate detailed official response from Pakistani authorities to these allegations.

The movement in PoK is being carried out over political representation, economic rights, basic facilities and demands of local people. The growing confrontation between protesters and the administration has raised serious questions over civilian safety and human rights in the region. The UKPNP has appealed to the United Nations and the international community to intervene and ensure an impartial investigation.
