CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: The recent protest in Delhi Police was not a sudden development. It began on October 23 with a clash between police personnel and lawyers after a parking dispute at Shahdara police station. This was followed by a meeting of officials, the transfer of two police officers and growing resentment among police personnel, which escalated the matter. Eventually, on November 2, personnel protested outside the Police Headquarters (PHQ) and demanded that the transfers of their officers be withdrawn.
October 23: Dispute at Shahdara police station
In the developments after a parking dispute in the Shahdara area, advocate Lalit Bansal suffered a serious head injury. Several lawyers reached Shahdara police station over the matter and demanded action against the accused. The lawyers alleged that police first assured them of arrests, but the accused were later released. During this period, ACP Mansavi Vashisth was also accused of threatening lawyers and showing her service revolver. Different claims emerged from the police side over these allegations.
October 28: Officers transferred and strike ends
As the dispute grew, lawyers in district courts began an indefinite work boycott. On October 28, a meeting was held between senior Delhi Police officers and representatives of the Bar Council and district bar associations. After this, ACP Mansavi Vashisth was moved from the Gandhi Nagar subdivision to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC), while Shahdara police station SHO Inspector Arun Kumar was transferred to the Security Branch. After the transfer orders were issued, the lawyers called off the strike.
October 30: Coordination meeting
Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar held a coordination meeting with representatives of the Bar Council of Delhi and district bar associations. It was agreed in the meeting to create a joint coordination and grievance redressal mechanism to resolve disputes between police and lawyers.
November 2: Protest outside Police Headquarters
The transfers of the two officers led to growing resentment in a section of the police department. Around 80 to 100 police personnel, including women personnel, gathered outside Gate No. 1 of the PHQ. They demanded that both officers be sent back to their previous postings and that a contact meeting be organised with the Police Commissioner. New Delhi DCP Sachin Sharma advised the protesters to maintain discipline and place their views inside the headquarters.
November 3: Report of ACP’s suspension
A day after the protest, reports emerged that ACP Mansavi Vashisth had been suspended on charges of indiscipline. According to reports, the action was taken over her role in the protest. This development has given a new turn to the discontent within the police department and the dispute linked to police-lawyer relations.
Across the entire sequence, different sides have emerged over the demands of police personnel, the complaints of lawyers and departmental action. The focus will now be on the administrative inquiry in the matter and the future direction of the police-lawyer coordination mechanism.
