Journalists asked Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif direct questions on terrorism and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed when he arrived to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. According to reports, Shehbaz Sharif did not answer either question and walked on.
As he entered the United Nations headquarters, a journalist asked Shehbaz Sharif when Pakistan would stop allegedly sheltering terrorists. The Pakistani prime minister did not respond to the question. Later, while he was leaving the headquarters, journalists asked him when Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed would be prosecuted. He did not answer that question either.
Hafiz Saeed is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and is designated as a terrorist in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. The National Investigation Agency has also named him as an accused in a supplementary chargesheet filed in connection with the conspiracy behind the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
The development comes at a time when India has raised questions about Pakistan over cross-border terrorism at the United Nations forum. Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi urged Pakistan to focus on development and economic issues and referred to allegations of cross-border terrorism.
