Shehbaz Sharif to raise Indus Waters Treaty issue at UNGA

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is preparing to raise his concerns over the Indus Waters Treaty with India at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). According to reports, Shehbaz Sharif will address the UN General Assembly on September 25 and may prominently raise the issue of India putting the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance.

Pakistan has repeatedly raised this issue on international platforms. Recently, at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, Shehbaz Sharif, without naming India, said water should not be used as a weapon and agreements related to shared waters should be respected.

At the UNGA, Pakistan’s focus may now remain on building international pressure on India. According to the report, Shehbaz Sharif is also proposed to meet US President Donald Trump on September 23 during his visit to New York. In such a situation, the issue of the Indus Waters Treaty may also come up in the bilateral meeting.

India had put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance in 2025 after the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan has been continuously registering its protest over the move. All eyes will now be on Shehbaz Sharif’s stance at the UNGA.
