Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a strong statement against India at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. He said any attempt to stop, obstruct or divert water belonging to Pakistan would be considered by Pakistan as an “act of war”. He also warned India in this regard.
Shehbaz Sharif said water should not be weaponised and rivers should be used to connect countries. He described the Indus river system as a lifeline for Pakistan and the entire region. He also questioned India’s position on the Indus Waters Treaty and said India’s decision to keep the treaty in abeyance had no legal basis. This is Pakistan’s position, while India’s stance is different.
On the Kashmir issue, the Pakistani Prime Minister reiterated his earlier position. He said Pakistan would continue to extend diplomatic, political and moral support to the people of Kashmir. In his address, he described Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein” and called for the dispute to be resolved through the United Nations.
Shehbaz Sharif also referred to last year’s India-Pakistan military confrontation and said the two nuclear-armed countries should not reach such a situation again. He also praised the mediation of United States President Donald Trump. India, meanwhile, has already cited security and cross-border terrorism-related reasons in explaining its position on the Indus Waters Treaty.
