CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Shiv Sena (UBT) local leader Pradeep Purnekar was shot dead in Thane, Maharashtra, prompting activity in political and police circles.
Unknown assailants opened fire on Purnekar and also attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon in the Ghodbunder Road area under the Kapurbawdi police station limits on Tuesday night. Seriously injured, Purnekar was taken to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.
Police have formed a 23-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav has been given charge of the team. According to police, one person has been arrested in the case, and two vehicles allegedly used in the incident have also been seized. The search for other suspects is continuing.
Pradeep Purnekar was a Shiv Sena (UBT) vibhag pramukh in Thane. Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and investigating the possible reasons behind the killing. In the preliminary investigation, several angles, including political and personal disputes, are being considered.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s son, Ram Purnekar, has accused former Thane mayor Meenakshi Shinde and her husband of being involved in the murder conspiracy. Meenakshi Shinde has rejected the allegations and said the truth will come out after the police investigation. Police are continuing to examine all allegations and possible angles.
