Concern has grown in the Indian and Sikh-American community after a Punjabi Sikh truck driver was stabbed 17 times in Wyoming, United States. The attack on the 28-year-old driver took place on September 13 at the Bitter Creek Rest Area near Interstate 80. The victim said he had gone to the restroom, where a man followed him and attacked him. He suffered injuries to his neck, chest, hands and ribs. The accused, 45-year-old Andrew Chris Bajdak, was arrested and booked on an attempted murder charge. However, investigation documents do not mention any racial or religious motive behind the attack.
After the incident, questions are also being raised over a recent social media post by the US Department of Homeland Security, or DHS. A few days earlier, DHS had used the name “Mr. Singh” in a post carrying a message related to immigration and road safety, along with the image of a man who appeared to be Sikh. The post was deleted after criticism. DHS said the post related to a specific Indian truck driver, Harjinder Singh, who is accused in a fatal road accident in Florida.
Indian-American lawmaker Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the Wyoming attack and said it was necessary to stop hatred targeting Sikh and South Asian communities. DHS, meanwhile, has rejected speculation about any link between the attack and its post. Authorities have not yet confirmed the actual motive behind the attack.
