CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A rescued dog may take time to adjust to a new home and family environment. Dogs that have already faced stress or bad experiences may initially appear frightened, quiet or inclined to keep their distance from people. In such a situation, the family’s patience and a safe environment are most important for the dog.
After bringing the dog home, set aside a calm and secure place where its bed, water and food are kept. Do not force it to move around the entire house in the beginning. Give it enough time to understand the new surroundings at its own pace.
Build a relationship of trust with the dog gradually. Avoid sudden hugging, loud noises or forced touching. Speak in a calm voice, and if the dog comes to you on its own, encourage it with affection or small treats. Creating a regular routine for food, walks and rest also helps the dog feel secure.
If the dog hides out of fear, growls or avoids people, do not punish it. Children should also be told not to disturb the dog while it is resting or eating. Introduce it slowly to new people, other pets and the outdoor environment.
If persistent fear, aggressive behaviour, refusal to eat or unusual health symptoms are seen, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian or a qualified behaviour expert. With proper care and patience, a rescued dog can gradually become a trusted companion of the family.
