CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid the growing use of smartphones and reels, the Singapore government has launched a unique initiative to encourage people to read books and long articles. Under the National Library Board’s (NLB) ReadSG campaign, people have been given a target of reading for at least 15 minutes every day. Under the scheme, participants will have to record their reading time online. Completing one 15-minute reading session will earn 20 virtual coins. Only one reading session can be recorded in a day. In this way, reading for 15 minutes daily for 50 days will earn a total of 1,000 coins.
The value of 1,000 virtual coins is stated to be 1 Singapore dollar, or about Rs 76 in Indian currency. However, this is not an amount that will be deposited directly into a bank account. The coins can be used under a fixed reward system or exchanged for prizes with cash value.
The ReadSG campaign is part of a five-year national programme. Its aim is to encourage people to spend some time away from short videos and constant screen use and develop the habit of reading for longer periods. According to the NLB, regular reading can help promote abilities such as concentration and deep thinking.
