New Delhi. The Election Commission has extended the timeline in six states, including Delhi, under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process for electoral rolls. According to the Commission’s new schedule, Delhi’s final electoral roll will now be published on December 22. Earlier, it was to be released on December 4. In Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Nagaland, the final electoral roll will be published on November 30.
In Delhi, applications for adding names to the electoral roll, deleting names or filing objections to any entry can now be submitted until November 25. The earlier deadline had been set as October 30. The deadline for disposal of the claims and objections received has been extended from November 30 to December 15.
In Maharashtra, the period for filing claims and objections has been extended until November 13, while the disposal process will continue until November 25. In Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, the deadline for disposal of claims has been set as November 20, and in Telangana until November 26. In Nagaland, this process will continue until November 25.
The decision to extend the timelines was taken after the chief electoral officers of the concerned states sought additional time. Earlier, during a hearing on the SIR process in Delhi, the Supreme Court had told the Election Commission that voters should be given adequate opportunity. The court had also questioned why there was such haste in filing claims and objections when elections are not due in Delhi in the near future.
The court had asked the Commission to consider making the process easier for including the names of eligible voters in the electoral roll and to continue accepting the related applications. After this, the Commission issued the revised schedule. The new timeline will give an additional opportunity to voters whose names could not be included in the draft electoral roll or who need corrections in their details.
